Exploring Afro-Latine Roots: From Chicago to LA

These bilingual (English/Spanish) posters are an adapted and expanded exhibition that incorporates narratives of Afro-Latine communities from both Los Angeles and the Chicagoland area. Originally focused on the Los Angelos area and presented at the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University under the title “AfroLatines in Los Angeles: Unveiling Voices, Empowering Communities,” this exhibit delves further into the vibrant tapestry of Afro-Latine experiences, histories, identities, and contributions across different regions and generations. It highlights the diverse experiences of Afro-Latines, including Afro-Mexicans, Afro-Puerto Ricans, and others, showcasing their intersecting identities and significant contributions.

The rich history of migration and cultural exchange in the Chicagoland area has allowed Afro-Lines to share the region's social and cultural landscape through various expressive forms. However, despite their impact, Afro-Latin voices have frequently been marginalized within both Latino and Black narratives. This exhibit seeks to amplify these stories, exploring themes such as ancestry, migration, and identity while linking both communities to broader historical contexts. It recognizes the individuality of each Afro-Latine experience, influenced by a variety of factors, while also celebrating the connections that unite these communities in overcoming challenges and affirming their identities.
